Mass Communication Vs. Mechanical Engineering

We graduated from two entirely different and opposite courses. Mass Communication and Mechanical Engineering. I initially thought at first that there's no way we could work out with such different paths. We would always argue about what course is much important and much needed by the world. Of course, we never agreed even at one point. He drew this in response to our numerous arguments about communication and engineering. Noticeably, he used our little Papemelroti notebook.

school caricatures and editorial cartoons

Like me, Lance was involved in their school's official publication as an illustrator and graphic designer. Here are three of the caricatures and cartoons he made for their Mechanical Engineering Society's official newsletter.

random sketches out of LQs

Like what I have mentioned on my previous blog, Lance would always wait for all my school activities to end so we could go home together and share the 2-hour ride from the city of Manila to the province of Laguna. Here are some of the random sketches he made while waiting:

Obviously, the sketches has something to do about our numerous fights regarding who's always wrong or right and who decides for the both of us back in college. Yes, I could be kind of immature at times.

Lance's Sketch Pad

I bought Lance a sketch pad as a gift on our first Christmas together. I remember how he would hesitate to show me his works unless they are already finished. He said something about being afraid he'd lose the momentum if he shows an incomplete work to anyone. I respected that--sometimes. Hahaha! Here are some of his drawings on his sketch pad that I always feel proud of showing. Hope you like them.

Waiting
(pencil)
The sketch above is a sketch of himself while he was waiting for me at the St. Therese's building gate at Adamson University. Back in college, he would always end up waiting for me for hours because I had to stay late at school for productions and shootings.

(pencil and charcoal)
This one is a sketch of me while I was writing our script for our radio drama back in college. It was the first school day for the year 2007 and I intentionally put off writing our script during the Christmas vacation so Lance and I did not attend our classes that day. He accompanied me at Luneta and Quirino grandstand where we tried to find a comfortable place where we can go on a picnic and at the same time think of a funny fantasy story to write. I came up with the Randolpito story inspired by Filipino superheroes such as Darna and Captain Barbell.Yes, I did lay down on my stomach while writing in the Luneta grounds.

Forever a Nicole Kidman Fan
 (pencil and charcoal)

We are both fans of Nicole Kidman and we both agree that she is the most beautiful and talented actress on earth. He used the picture of Nicole Kidman from her Chanel No. 5 advert.

(pencil and charcoal)
Lance once told me that he didn't want to draw me because he was afraid that it would become imperfect. He said he felt the pressure to make it perfect can actually make it worse so I stopped asking him to draw me. It took him almost 2 years before he could show me a portrait of myself. He surprised me with this sketch a couple of weeks before my birthday in 2007. I told him I think he made me look beautiful in it. :-)

Heaven and Hell
(pencil and charcoal)
Lance and I had always discussed heaven and hell in our arguments. I once said maybe the other religions are right: that there is no hell and it is merely a propaganda of the Catholic Church to scare us. He never considered that idea despite my logical arguments why it could actually be true.

Faith
(pencil and charcoal)
Between Lance and I, he had always been the most spiritual one. He's a devout Catholic and I have always been the skeptic one. He is also very fond of angels. He knows them all by name. He used a page of a religious book as a model for this piece.

 (pencil and charcoal)
Lance and I were staying at our sari-sari store when he drew his left hand. He was inspired by my amusement in drawing my left hand so he tried it while we're killing boredom at the store.

(pencil and charcoal)
This is the last sketch before he became too busy at school to find time with his sketch pad. We drew this piece together as we have always planned even before we became lovers. When we were still at the courtship stage, we planned on painting on a single canvas together when we found out that we both have interests in paintings. We haven't done the painting together thing yet but we're planning to buy some materials this coming week.

drawing out of academic frustrations

I once told Lance that I enjoyed drawing first before I fell in love with writing when I was a kid. When our relationship was about 1 and a half year old, we decided to buy this small notebook from Papemelroti and promised to doodle and write down our current thought anytime we feel like it. I was supposed to write a journal and he was supposed to draw his sketches but apparently I got so inspired with some of the random sketches he made for me that I decided to do some sketching myself instead. I enjoyed drawing my left hand if you could notice. I guess it's because it's the first thing I see.

The sketches were made in the midst of academic frsutrations which I was currently dealing at the time. The drawings were filled with negative thoughts and images of frustrations. If you're a friend from college or a friend who knows how passionate I am with my writing, you'd probably understand where my depression at the time was coming from. Lance once told me I draw with too much rough edges. I guess that's why I am a Van Gogh fan.

The Lyceum of the Philippines-Manila Miniature

This is one of the few artworks that we did together back in college. The first one was the Powerade-printed bandannas for the Battle of the Ads 2006 of the 3rd year students of Adamson University's Mass Communication Society. That was the first time I have spent the night at Lance's house. :p Anyway, this piece was a project for the annual Engineering Bulletin Board competition in Lyceum of the Philippines-Manila. Lance was known in class for his artistic hands so their society president assigned the LPU caricature to him. We spent the whole night cutting out and measuring cardboards. It was already 7 o' clock in the morning when we finally made the finishing touches and sprayed it with paint. The spray painting was fun. Too bad I lost some of the pictures we've taken while working on it. They won 3rd place , by the way.

Story behind it: It was the first time I have spent the whole day with Lance's family without him. He had to rush to school before 12pm so he asked me to stay at their house where I could get some sleep. He promised to be back by 5pm so we could attend mass with my family. I did get good sleep on his bed in the upper part of their double deck. I also had lunch and afternoon snacks with his whole family while he was at school. But he failed to return by 5pm because he could not leave his classmates to finish the bulletin board on their own. I had to leave their house without him. I had fun with his family but still I got mad at him for not keeping his promise.
